Understanding Your Ideal Client: A Guide to Creating Customer Personas

I wanted to dig a little more into customer personas. If you haven’t read last week’s post, I suggest starting there: Discovering Your Ideal Customers: Tips for Health & Wellness Business Owners. As a reminder, a customer persona is a detailed profile of a fictional person who is in your ideal target audience.

This week, we’re looking at some client persona examples for a hypothetical pilates studio. After talking to current clients and doing a survey with them, they have some basic demographic & psychographic information to work with. They’ve decided that there are two key groups that are part of their target audience: Postpartum Mom and Injury-Prone Fitness Enthusiast. Here’s the general info they’ve gathered about each of these groups:

Postpartum Mom

  • Age range: 25-40

  • Motivation to join the pilates studio and desired fitness goals: Seeking a supportive community, postpartum recovery, and regaining strength after pregnancy. Goals include toning core muscles, improving posture, and increasing overall fitness.

  • Current fitness goals and challenges: Consistency in exercising postpartum, finding time for self-care, rebuilding core strength, and establishing a routine.

  • Experience with the pilates studio: Likes the supportive and inclusive atmosphere, postpartum-specific class offerings, and knowledgeable instructors. Suggests adding more social events to foster a stronger sense of community.

  • Typical workout routine and exercise frequency: Attends postpartum pilates classes 2-3 times per week, engages in home exercises and walks on non-class days.

  • Exercise background: Active before and during pregnancy, looking for postpartum-specific exercises.

  • Hobbies and interests outside of classes at the pilates studio: Baby care, prenatal and postnatal yoga, self-care activities like meditation or journaling.

  • Factors important when selecting a fitness facility or studio: Postpartum-specific expertise, supportive community, convenient class schedule.

  • Decision-making process when choosing a fitness or wellness provider: Relies on recommendations from other postpartum women, seeks online reviews and testimonials, and attends trial classes to evaluate the environment and instructor expertise.

Injury-Prone Fitness Enthusiast

  • Age range: 30-45

  • Motivation to join the pilates studio and desired fitness goals: Seeking safe and effective exercise alternatives to prevent injuries and rehabilitate existing ones. Goals include improving strength, flexibility, and overall wellness.

  • Current fitness goals and challenges: Rehabilitating injuries, preventing future injuries, building functional strength, and improving flexibility.

  • Experience with the pilates studio: Likes personalized attention from instructors, well-maintained equipment, and injury prevention focus. Would like to see more variety in class offerings.

  • Typical workout routine and exercise frequency: Attends reformer pilates classes 2-3 times per week, complements with other low-impact activities like swimming.

  • Exercise background: Previous experience with high-intensity workouts and sports, but looking for a safer approach.

  • Hobbies and interests outside of classes at the pilates studio: Hiking and outdoor activities.

At this point, you’ve done the work of finding your target audience(s), and now you can use that information along with ChatGPT to help write client personas.
